Wilde experienced quite a bit of scandal in his later life; he was accused of being a ‘sodomite’ (sodomy was illegal at that time) and was arrested for ‘gross indecency.’ He was imprisoned in London in 1895, and was forced to do daily hard labor. Released in 1897, he went to Paris shortly after, spending his days soaking himself in absinthe until he died of cerebral meningitis at age 46.
